چکیده

We have studied an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 4559 with XMM-Newton, and its peculiar star-forming environment with HST/WFPC2. The X-ray source is one of the brightest in its class (L x ≈ 2 × 10 40 erg s −1). Luminosity and timing arguments suggest a mass ∼ > 50M ⊙ for the accreting black hole. The ULX is located near the rim of a young (age < 30 Myr), large (diameter ≈ 700 pc) ring-like star forming complex possibly triggered by the impact of a dwarf satellite galaxy through the gas-rich outer disk of NGC 4559. We speculate that galaxy interactions (including the infall of high-velocity clouds and satellites on a galactic disk) and low-metallicity environments offer favourable conditions for the formation of compact remnants more massive than " standard " X-ray binaries, and accreting from a massive Roche-lobe filling companion.

On the artificial nature of aperiodic variability in XMM-Newtonobservations of M 31 X-ray sources and the ultraluminous X-raysource NGC 4559 ULX-7

Context. Power density spectra (PDS) that are characteristic of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have been previously reported for M 31 X-ray sources, observed by XMM-Newton. However, we have recently discovered that these PDS result from the improper addition/subtraction of non-simultaneous lightcurves. Aims. To understand the properties and origins of the artefact. Methods. We re-analysed our ...

The environment of a ULX in NGC 4559: an optical study

We have studied the candidate optical counterparts and the stellar population in the star-forming complex around the bright ULX in the western part of the spiral galaxy NGC4559, using HST/WFPC2, XMM-Newton/Optical Monitor, and ground-based data. We find that the ULX is located near a small group of OB stars, but is not associated with any massive young clusters nor with any extraordinary massiv...

The Nature of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources in Nearby Galaxies

The advanced capabilities of the Chandra and XMMNewton observatories mean that, for the first time, the detailed study of the brightest point-like X-ray sources in nearby galaxies outside of the local group is a realistic aim. Here, we present the results of a Chandra ACIS-S study of two of the nearest and brightest sources in the rare ultraluminous (LX > 10 39 erg s) X-ray source class, NGC 52...

The Ultra Luminous X - ray sources in the High Velocity System of NGC 1275

We report the results of a study of X-ray point sources coincident with the High Velocity System (HVS) projected in front of NGC 1275. A very deep X-ray image of the core of the Perseus cluster made with the Chandra Observatory has been used. We find a population of Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources (ULX; 7 sources with L X (0.5 − 7.0 keV) > 7 × 10 39 erg s −1). As with the ULX populations in the An...

A Chandra observation of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 4485 / NGC 4490

We report the results of a 20 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the galaxy pair NGC 4485/4490. This is an interacting system containing a late-type spiral with an enhanced star formation rate (NGC 4490), and an irregular companion that possesses a disturbed morphology. A total of 29 discrete X-ray sources are found coincident with NGC 4490, but only one is found within NGC 4485. The sources rang...
